Red blood cells (RBC) are the most abundant cell in the human body, with a central role in oxygen transport and its delivery to tissues. However, omics technologies recently revealed the unanticipated complexity of the RBC proteome and metabolome, paving the way for a reinterpretation of the mechanisms by which RBC metabolism regulates systems biology beyond oxygen transport. The new data and analytical tools also informed the dissection of the changes that RBCs undergo during refrigerated storage under blood bank conditions, a logistic necessity that makes >100 million units available for life-saving transfusions every year worldwide. In this narrative review, we summarize the last decade of advances in the field of RBC metabolism in vivo and in the blood bank in vitro, a narrative largely influenced by the authors’ own journeys in this field. We hope that this review will stimulate further research in this interesting and medically important area or, at least, serve as a testament to our fascination with this simple, yet complex, cell.

About ASH Image Bank
Overview
The American Society of Hematology (ASH) Image Bank is intended to serve as a comprehensive reference and teaching tool that is widely accessible to physicians and hematology students around the world. The images are presented in a digital, case-based format that allows both the images and text to be searched, cross-referenced, and hyper-linked to other cases as well as other educational resources, including Hematology, the Society’s annual meeting Education Program Book, the ASH Teaching Cases and the syllabus from the ASH Self-Assessment Program. In addition to the case studies, the Image Bank includes a collection of basic atlas images.

This project is a major outreach effort to the clinical and academic community, defined as members of ASH, internists, clinical pathologists, pediatricians, hematologists and oncologists.

Bağlantı için tıklayınız

Internet Atlas of Hematology is the comprehensive section of the multimedial Atlas of Hematology. Complete version of the atlas is published exclusively on CD-ROM. The following section describes the morphology of normal peripheral blood and bone marrow cells as well as some abnormal peripheral blood cells. Each picture contains detailed description and comments. Cells on some pictures are labeled with numbers that allow their prompt and exact identification. Complete version of atlas of hematology, containing about 700 microscopic images is available only on CD-ROM. The Internet version gives the access to about 200 pictures. The first part of the Atlas containing 184 pictures is dedicated to morphology of normal and atypical cells of blood and bone marrow. Each picture is accompanied by a description. Individual hematological disorders are shown in the second part of the atlas, which is available on CD-ROM. The Internet gives the access to one typical presentation concerning the megaloblastic anemia.

– The Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology is a peer reviewed on-line journal and database in free access on internet devoted to genes, cytogenetics, and clinical entities in cancer, and cancer-prone diseases.

– The aim is to cover the entire field under study: as the task is huge, the Atlas is -and will be- incomplete by that very fact.

– It presents concise and updated reviews (cards) or longer texts (deep insights), a huge portal towards genetics and/or cancer databases and journals, teaching items in Genetics for students in Medicine and in Sciences, and a case report section.

– It is made for and by: clinicians and researchers in cytogenetics, molecular biology, oncology, haematology, and pathology. Contributions are reviewed before acceptance.

– It deals with cancer research and genomics. It is at the crossroads of research, virtual medical university (university and post-university e-learning), and telemedicine. It contributes to “meta-medicine”, this mediation, using new information technology, between the increasing amount of knowledge and the individual, having to use the information.

American Society of Hematology

Mission
The mission of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) is to further the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders affecting the blood, bone marrow, and the immunologic, hemostatic and vascular systems, by promoting research, clinical care, education, training, and advocacy in hematology.

History
In April 1958, the first official ASH meeting was held in Atlantic City, NJ, where more than 300 hematologists gathered to discuss clinical and research matters related to blood and blood diseases. Since that initial meeting, ASH has played an active and important role in the development of hematology as a discipline. For more than five decades, ASH has sponsored its annual meeting, the premier annual education and scientific event in the field of hematology, and has published Blood, the Journal of the American Society of Hematology, which is the most cited peer-reviewed publication in the field.

This year, ASH is celebrating its 50th anniversary. We invite you to participate in this commemoration by learning more about the rich history of the Society and the field of hematology.
